3000 barbel have just been stocked into the Dorset Stour as part of a habitat enhancement and stocking programme initiated and partly funded by the Barbel Society, in conjunction with local fishing clubs and the EA. The barbel were marked with elastomer dye inserts at the EA Fish farm at Calverton, Nottingham. The fish follow 3000 small barbel stocked last year, and a further 3000 are expected to be stocked next year. The BS has also recently paid for tons of gravel to be placed into the river to improve stone croys placed in the river by the EA, and will continue to support other enhancement work on the middle river.

£1000 worth of barbel have been stocked into the River Aire in Yorkshire, paid for by the Barbel Society. The Keighley Angling Club applied for help from the BS Research and Conservation Fund, and the stocking follows BS donation for stocking into the River Dane two years ago.

The Barbel Society and the EA are jointly funding some habitat enhancement work on the River Teme at Bransford, and it expected that large willows will be pollarded to let light in to the river, improving the habitat for all wildlife as well as the fish. Instream cover is to be preserved, and the programme of works is likely to continue for several years.

The Upper Thames Barbel Project is going to be supported by a BS donation to pay for gravel which will be used to top dress and improve spawning areas on the river that were historically removed by dredging. The work is due to occur next spring. The Society also helped in the tagging of 1250 barbel, which will be stocked into the Upper Thames this autumn.

The Society is shortly to be involved in talks with the EA to see how we can help with a large project involving research into juvenile barbel survival in the Great Ouse.
